Founded in 1993, UTHM University’s primary mission was to train and qualify faculty members in various fields of applied arts to become proficient in various branches of engineering.
The training institute was jointly managed by the Malaysian University of Technology and the Malaysian Ministry of Education.
The university has witnessed significant progress in producing graduates equipped with skills and knowledge enabling them to compete effectively.
As a result, on September 20, 2006, the Malaysian government approved the upgrade of the college to a full-fledged university and changed its name to Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM). On February 1, 2007, the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mustafa Mohammed, officially announced this change.
Later, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein Onn issued an official announcement of the name change on March 2, 2007.
